Objective 3.1

Implement, Manage, and Troubleshoot Disk Devices

C. Incorrect:

The issue is not Driver Signing; changing this setting does not correct

the problem.

D. Incorrect:

If the device appears in Windows Catalog, it should be possible to

install it.

E. Incorrect:

Safe mode is used for resolving problems caused by installing drivers

that lead to system instability. You do not use safe mode to install new hardware

devices.

Objective 3.2

Implement, Manage, and Troubleshoot Display Devices

In most circumstances, Windows XP automatically detects and configures display

adapters and monitors. However, unusual hardware configurations do cause problems

that require troubleshooting. For example, if the monitor, video adapter, or device

driver does not support Plug and Play, Windows XP will detect your monitor as Default

Monitor, and you will need to manually configure the monitor type. Even if all the dis-

play components are Plug and Play, connecting them to a keyboard-video-mouse

switch box can block the Plug and Play signals from the monitor.

Windows XP generally prevents misconfigurations by testing updated settings and dis-

playing a confirmation dialog box. If you do not confirm the new settings, Windows

XP restores the old settings. If you, a user, or Windows XP does configure display set-

tings that your monitor cannot support, or if you switch to a monitor that does not sup-

port your current settings, you might not be able to see the display to troubleshoot the

problem. In this circumstance, you can use safe mode to start Windows XP with basic

video settings and select an acceptable configuration.

If you plan to enable multiple monitors for a computer, install Windows XP Profes-

sional with only one adapter present. After you have completed the installation of the

additional video adapters and video monitors, you use the Settings tab in the Display

program in Control Panel to configure multiple monitor support.

To successfully answer questions in this objective, you must know how to use the Add

Hardware Wizard, Device Manager, and the Display program in Control Panel to

install, configure, and troubleshoot both legacy and Plug and Play video adapters and

monitors. You must be able to install multiple video adapters and monitors, change the

primary adapter, and move items between monitors.
