Alittle thought, however will show why speech is the first and writing secondry to language. Human beings have writing ( as fas as we can see from surviving evidence) for at least 5000 years, but they have been talking for muchlonger, certainly ever since there were humnan beings. When writing developed it came from and represented speech, albeit imperfectly. Even today there are spoken laguages that have no written form. Furthermore we all learn to talk well before we learn to write; any human child that is not severely handicapped physically or mentallywill learn to talk; a normal human being cannot be prevented from doing so. On the other hand, it takes a special effort to learn to write, for example, in the past many intelligent and important persons of society did not have the skill of wrting, and today many people who speak language with writing systems, never learn to raed or to write, while some who learn to write, do also imperfectly. To assure the primacy of speech over writing is not possible, however, to disparage writing. One advantage wrting has over speech is that it is more permanent and possible to make the records that any civilization must have. Thus, if speaking makes us human, writing makes us civilized.
