2.2.7. Adverbial ing-participle clauses expressing time and reason
An adverbial ing-participle clause may at the same time implies both time
meaning and reason meaning. For example:
Seeing her incapacitated husband and her two small boys sobbing,
Debbie knew she had no choice.
( 67, Sunflower-August 1999)
This sentence can be understood as follow:
• When she saw her incapacitated husband and heard her two boys sobbing,
• Because she saw her incapacitated husband and heard her two boys sobbing,
In Vietnamese we have two equivalent sentences:
Khi chị Debbie nhìn thấy ngời chồng bị bất lực và hai đứa con khóc nức
nở , chị Debbie biết chị không còn cách nào khác.
Or: Vì chị nhìn thấy ngời chồng bị bất lực và hai đứa con khóc nức nở, chị
Debbie biết chị không còn cách nào khác.
If the interpreter does not want to distinguish whether the adverbial ing-participle
clause expressing time or reason, he/she can omit the subordinator.
Nhìn thấy ngời chồng bị bất lực và hai đứa con khóc nức nở, chị Debbie
biết chị không còn cách nào khác.
The problem in interpreting the adverbial-participle clause is to make sure they
express time or reason. For most cases, both meanings are acceptable so when
changing them into Vietnamese, subordinators: “khi” or “vì” are used. For
example:
Knowing she had failed as a conductor, she vowed she would stick
to singing and leave directing to other.
( 83, Sunflower-November 1999)
This sentence can be interpreted as follow:
Khi biết rằng minh đã thât bại với t cách là ngời hớng dẫn dàn đồng ca, cô ấy thề
sẽ gắn bó suốt đời với sự nghiệp ca hát và nhờng quyền điều khiển lại cho ngời
khác. (when she knew that she had failed á a conductor, she vowed she would
stick to singing and leave directing to other.)
Or: Vì biết rằng minh đã thất bại với t cách là ngời hớng dẫn dàn đồng ca, cô ấy
thề sẽ gắn bó suốt đời với sự nghiệp ca hát và nhờng quyền điều khiển lại cho ngời
khác. (Because she knew that she had failed as a conductor, she vowed she would
Another example:
Seeing Oliver run away at such rapid pace, she very naturally
concluded that he was a rubber.
( 26, Oliver Twist)
Khi nhìn thấy Oliver chạy biến đi với tốc độ rất nhanh, cô ây
tự nhiên kết luận rằng nó là một tên cớp. (When she saw Oliver run away at
such rapid pace, she very naturally concluded that he was a rubber.
Vì nhìn thấy Oliver chạy bién đi với một tốc độ rất nhanh, cô
ấy tự nhiên kết luận rằng nó là một tên cớp. (Because she saw Oliver
run away at such rapid pace, she very naturally concluded that he was
a rubber.)
Chapter III: Learners' confusions in using ing-participle
clauses and some suggested solutions
In the previous chapters, we have discussed about the semantic functions of
adverbial ing-participle clauses. During our study, we find that Vietnamese
students may make some mistakes when using adverbial ing-participle clauses. So
in this chapter, we will focus our study on learners’ confusions and give some
suggestions for solving this problem
