Using the Backup Utility

Note Windows Backup does not support writing directly to a CD-ROM or DVD during the backup process. However, you can back up to a hard drive and then manually copy the backup file to optical media.

If you want tohave Backup start in Advanced mode each time you start the program, clear the AlwaysStart In Wizard Mode check box on the Welcome Page before clicking Advanced Mode.As you will learn in Lesson 2, “Backing Up Data,” Advanced mode provides access toa number of options that you cannot access by using the Backup Or Restore Wizard.

Who Can Back Up and Restore Data?

To successfully back up and restore data on a computer running Windows XP Profes-sional, you must have the appropriate permissions and user rights, as described in thefollowing list:

All users can back up their own files and folders. They can also back up files forwhich they have the Read, Read and Execute, Modify, or Full Control permission.

All users can restore files and folders for which they have the Write, Modify, or FullControl permission.

Any user who is assigned the Backup Files and Directories right can back up data.Any user who is assigned the Restore Files And Directories user right can restorebacked up data.

Members of the Administrators and Backup Operators groups can back up andrestore all files (regardless of the assigned permissions). By default, members ofthese groups have the Backup Files And Directories and Restore Files And Direc-tories user rights.

Exam Tip To back up all data on a computer regardless of the assigned permissions to that data, you must use a user account that has the Backup Files And Directories user right assigned. To restore data, you must use a user account that has the Restore Files And Direc-tories user right assigned. Members of the Administrators and Backup Operators local groups have these rights by default.
