How to Recover Important Registry Keys by Using Recovery Console

In Chapter 4, “Modifying and Troubleshooting the Startup Process,” you learned howto install and start the Recovery Console, and also how to use the Recovery Console tohelp repair a Windows installation. If your recovery efforts do not allow you to startWindows, you can use the Recovery Console to replace two important system files:

The System file is used by Windows XP Professional during startup to create theHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM Registry key, which stores application settingsthat apply to all users of the computer.

The Software file is used during startup to create the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE Registry key, which contains information about the local computer, including hardware data (such as bus type, system memory, and device drivers)and operating system data (such as startup control parameters). In fact, if you are troubleshooting a computer that will not start, you should try toreplace these files before going to the trouble of restoring the system using a recoverydisk. The system and software files are stored in %systemroot%\System32\config. Abackup copy is stored in the %systemroot%\repair folder, and this backup is refreshedeach time you back up the System State data on the computer. You can use the Recov-ery Console to replace the current version of each file with the backed up copy.
