The Olympic Games began in 776BC with a foot race of about 200 meters. They were held on a
single day at Olympia in Greece. The Games were then held every four years from that day.
Later, the Games were extended to cover five days. Gradually, other sports were added, including
wrestling, boxing and the pentathlon. This event combined running, jumping, discuss and wrestling.
The games were very important to the ancient Greeks. They would even stop fighting wars with
other cities to take part in them. The athletes would take three months off to travel to the stadium,
compete, and then return home to continue fighting.
