The word “Olympic” comes from the name of the town Olympia in Greece, where the ancient Olympic Games were always held.

The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C., and the Games took place every four years after that date until A.D.394.. In 1875,

a French scholar and educator, Pierre de Coubertin, proposed that the Games should be revived as an international competition to

encourage both sport and world peace. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Like the ancient Games, the

athletes were men only. Women began to take part in the Games in 1900. Since that time, the Games have been held every four

years as in the ancient Greece. The Games, however, did not take place in 1916, 1940 and 1944 because of the two World Wars.

Only amateur athletes are admitted to the Games, and these words appear at every Olympic opening: “The most important thing

is not to win but to take part.”
