6. Restarts IEEE 802.1x Authentication (which you will learn more about in the

section “Authentication,” later in this chapter).

Exam Tip For the exam, be aware of the actions that happen when you repair a network connection. In particular, know that repairing a connection (or using ipconfig /renew at the command prompt) forces the computer to release its current IP address and attempt to renew its lease with a DHCP server.

Setting Options for a Connection

To configure options for LAN connection, you will open the Properties dialog box for

that connection, shown in Figure 15-4. To do so, in the Network Connections window,

right-click a connection, and then click Properties. The Connect Using section shows

the network adapter associated with the LAN connection. Click the Configure button to

open the Properties dialog box for the adapter; this is the same Properties dialog box

you see if you view the properties for the network adapter through Device Manager

(which is covered in Chapter 6, “Installing, Managing, and Troubleshooting Hardware

Devices and Drivers”).

The Local Area Network Connection Properties dialog box also lists networking com-

ponents installed on the computer. The components listed are available to all connec-

tions. Uninstalling a component makes the component unavailable to any network

connection. Clearing the check box next to a component disables that component for

only the connection you are viewing. The following networking components are

installed by default for all LAN connections:

Client For Microsoft Networks This component provides the capability to

access a Microsoft-based network.

File And Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks This component provides the

capability to share files and printers on the local computer with network users that

access the computer through the given connection. If you have multiple connections

on a computer, you can select or clear this check box for each connection individu-

ally, thus controlling the connections on which File And Printer Sharing is enabled.
