IX. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions

Otherwise known as " the old man in the forest", the Sumatran orangutan is an endangered species. Its

population has dropped precipitously by more than fifty percent in the last hundred years.

Conservationists are fighting to save their natural habitats which have been ravaged by both deliberate and

unintentional forest fires. In addition to the fires from the intense heat, forests have also been cleared for

agriculture and plantations.

Logging also has disastrous consequences for the orangutans. After all, they are arboreal creatures.

Throughout the day, they swing among the trees and eat fruits and leaves found there. At night, they sleep in

nests on the trees which they have constructed using leaves and branches.

The threats to the orangutan population are very real and dangerous as the orangutans take along time to

reproduce. At most, a female orangutan can produce four surviving young over a lifetime. She carries her baby

for more than eight months before giving birth. The baby is dependent on its mother for six years. During this

time, it is possible for the mother to have another baby but this does not always happen especially when the

orangutan is nearing its thirty- year lifespan.

The World Wildlife Fund is working with the Indonesian government to create wildlife sanctuaries where

logging is banned. Stricter laws are being set to punished those who destroy the habitats of these animals.
