Soccer is full of heroes and superstars. One soccer player is far more famous than those players. His name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, but he is more commonly known as Pele. He was born in 1940 in Brazil, where soccer is a national passion, and Pele grew up playing the game. His father was a talented soccer player until he broke his leg. After that, he couldn’t play soccer, so he spent his time teaching his son about the game. In 1956, Pele joined his first professional soccer club, the Santos football club. With Pele on their team, Santos became one of the top soccer teams in South America, and Pele quickly became famous in South America. Then came the magical year of 1958. This was perhaps the greatest year of Pele’s career, in which he scored 158 goals and led Brazil to the World Cup championship. Under Pele’s leadership, Brazil won the World Cup again in 1962 and 1970. In addition to helping his team to great victories, Pele achieved amazing things for himself. In 1969, he scored his 1000th goal. By the time he stopped playing soccer, he had scored 1,282 goals in 1,363 games. This is almost one goal for every game. No other player in soccer has even come close to challenging the record.
