Figure 15-11 General options for a dial-up connection include modem configuration, phone number, and dialing rules.■

Options The Options tab, shown in Figure 15-12, provides access to dialing and

redialing options. You can configure Windows to display a dialog box during dialing

so that you can see the dialing status. You can also have Windows prompt you for

a user name and password each time it dials, include a Windows domain text box

so that you can log on to a domain when you connect to a private network, and

even prompt you for the phone number instead of automatically displaying it. The

Options tab also lets you configure how many times Windows should attempt to

redial a number if it is busy, how long to wait between dialing attempts, and the

number of minutes after which Windows should disconnect if no network traffic is

transmitted over the connection.

Security The Security tab allows you to configure authentication settings for the

dial-up connection, which are used when dialing in to a private network.

Networking The Networking tab displays the type of dial-up server being

dialed and the networking components enabled for the connection. This tab

works just like the General tab of a LAN connection (refer to Figure 15-4).

Advanced The Advanced tab allows you to enable Windows Firewall and ICS,

which are covered in Lessons 4 and 5.

How to Connect by using a Dial-Up Connection

After creating and configuring a dial-up connection, you can establish the connection by

double-clicking the connection in the Network Connections window (or by right-clicking

the connection and then clicking Connect). This action opens the Connect dialog box, as

shown in Figure 15-13. The options you see here (such as entering a domain name)

depend on how you configured the dial-up connection, as does the information (such as

the user name and password) that is already filled in. Click Dial to establish the connection.
