OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS BY USING DHCPBEFORE YOU BEGIN THIS EXERCISE, YOU...

2. When Andrew is at home, he will connect his notebook computer to a digital sub-

scriber line (DSL) modem supplied by his ISP. The ISP has issued Andrew a static

IP address. How should you configure Andrew’s computer so that it will use the

static IP address when he is at home without interfering with the DHCP service on

the company network?

You should configure an alternate TCP/IP configuration on Andrew’s computer. To do this, youmust first make sure that his computer is configured to use automatic IP addressing as its pri-mary configuration method. You can do this by opening the Properties dialog box for the LANconnection, opening the Properties dialog box for the TCP/IP protocol, and then selecting theObtain IP Address Automatically option. When Windows XP Professional is configured to obtainan address automatically, an Alternate Configuration tab becomes available in the Internet Pro-tocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box. On this tab, select the User Configured option and enterthe appropriate IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server addresses providedby the ISP.
