Chapter Summary

The Windows Backup utility provides a simple interface for backing up andrestoring data. The Backup utility offers two modes: Wizard mode, which stepsyou through a backup or restore, and Advanced mode, which provides a more tra-ditional backup interface and access to more options.

Before backing up data, it is best to make sure that users have closed all theirfiles. To back up data, you can use the Backup And Recovery Wizard to select thefiles that you want to back up, the location to create the backup file, and anyadvanced backup options that you want to use (such as verifying files after theyare backed up). You can also schedule backup jobs to occur at a later time or atregular intervals.

To ensure that you can successfully restore data, you should follow certain guide-lines, such as keeping thorough documentation on all your backup jobs and per-forming test restores on a regular basis.

The Automated System Recovery Wizard creates a system recovery disk (on afloppy disk), which contains your hard drive configuration and a backup of yourlocal system partition on tape or as a file.
