Lesson 2

Backing Up Data

In the Schedule Job dialog box, you can set the date, time, and number of occur-rences for the backup job to repeat, such as every Friday at 10:00 P.M. You canalso display all of the scheduled tasks for the computer by selecting the Show Mul-tiple Schedules check box. This helps prevent you from scheduling multiple taskson the same computer at the same time. You can also click Advanced to schedule how long the backup can last and for howmany days, weeks, months, or years you want this schedule to continue. After you schedule the backup job and complete the Backup Or Restore Wizard, theBackup Utility places the backup job on the calendar on the Schedule Jobs tab in Win-dows Backup. The backup job automatically starts at the time that you specified.

Offsite Backups

As you are learning in this chapter, backing up your data is a critical part of ensur-ing that you can recover from disaster. On many networks, administrators tend toleave backed up data close to the location where backups are created. Adminis-trators might leave data on a network drive, assuming that because the data existsin two separate locations (in the original location and on drive where it is backedup), it is safe. Even when a removable backup medium is used, all too oftenadministrators leave that medium in the same room as the backup server—tapeson a shelf or in a locking cabinet, for example.Although this practice provides a certain level of assurance that you can recoverdata if a user’s computer (or even the backup server itself) crashes, you shouldtake the extra measure of keeping a copy of backed up data in an offsite storagelocation. It is best to keep a copy of data in a fire-resistant safe in a completelydifferent building from your network. Keeping offsite backups requires moreeffort, but in the event of a true catastrophe (such as a fire or natural disaster), anoffsite backup can be a real life saver.

Practice: Backing Up Data

In this practice, you use the Backup Or Restore Wizard to back up some files to yourhard disk. You then create a backup job to perform a backup operation at a later timeby using Task Scheduler.
