In Windows XP with Service Pack 2, the Messenger ser-vice is disabled by default. You must enable the service on a computer before that computer can receive messages.If you back up to a removable media device, make sure that the following preliminarytasks are complete:

The backup device is attached to a computer on the network and is turned on. Ifyou are backing up to tape, you must attach the tape device to the computer onwhich you run the Backup Utility.

The media device is listed in the Windows Catalog.

The media is loaded in the media device and properly prepared. For example, ifyou are using a tape drive, ensure that a tape is loaded in the tape drive. Youmight need to format a tape before backing up.

How to Select Files and Folders to Back Up

After you complete the preliminary tasks, you are ready to perform the backup. You canuse the Backup Or Restore Wizard (refer to Figure 20-1). To start the Backup Or RestoreWizard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, andthen click Backup. Click Next to close the Welcome To The Backup Or Restore Wizardpage. On the Backup Or Restore page, ensure that Back Up Files And Settings is selected,and click Next to display the What To Back Up page, as shown in Figure 20-7.Specify what to back up by choosing one of the following options:My Documents And Settings Backs up the My Documents folder, along with theFavorites folder, desktop, and cookies of the current user. This is the defaultselection.Everyone’s Documents And Settings Backs up the My Documents folder, alongwith the Favorites folders, desktop, and cookies of all users.All Information On This Computer Backs up all files on the computer on whichyou are running the Backup Utility except those files that the Backup Utilityexcludes by default, such as certain power management files. Selecting this optionalso backs up the System State data, which includes the Windows Registry andimportant configuration files. Selecting this option also creates a system recoverydisk that you can use to restore Windows in the case of a major failure. Read Les-son 4, “Using the Automated System Recovery Wizard,” for more informationabout system recovery disks.Let Me Choose What To Back Up Backs up selected files and folders. This includesfiles and folders on the computer where you run the Backup Utility and anyshared file or folder on the network. How to Specify Backup Destination, Media Settings, and Advanced

After you select what you want to back up, you must provide information aboutbackup media.
