You may have recognized this story line—it describes part of the plot of Les

Miserables by Victor Hugo. You may also have noticed, as you were reading the above

passage, that every sentence begins with the subject. If some of the sentences were to be-

gin with an adverb or a prepositional phrase, the passage would be greatly improved.
