Alligators and Crocodiles

Alligators and crocodiles are both native to America, and they both belong to the group of animals

called crocodilians. They also look similar, and many people might even think they are the same

animal. There are several differences that can be used to tell them apart.

American alligators are much more common than African crocodiles. Because they hate the cold,

alligators live in the southern part of the country usually in fresh water lakes and swamps. Their skin is

dark with bright stripes and spots of yellow. They eat almost anything they can catch, including fish,

birds, and, occasionally people! Until 1970, it was legal to hunt

them, but too many were killed for

their skins. Now there are strict controls on hunting, and alligators are again numerous in many areas.

American crocodiles are a bit different. They are even more

sensitive to cold, so they live only in the

tropical climate of southern Florida. Most crocodiles prefer the saltwater of coastal areas. They are very

shy, so people do not often see them in the wild. Their skin is grayish-green or brown, and their heads

are longer and more triangle-shaped than that of an alligator. They eat only fish and other water

animals. Crocodiles are listed as an endangered species, so they are also protected by US law.
